Adaptive field hockey brings people together through the power of play.

It’s a version of the game designed for athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities, where connection, teamwork, and inclusion matter more than competition. Players learn, grow, and celebrate achievements side by side—showing that when everyone has the chance to take the field, the whole community wins.

Expanding access to the game

Pathways to Play for All Abilities

For many athletes with diverse abilities, the connection and camaraderie of field hockey have historically been out of reach. All Starz Adaptive Field Hockey is changing that by expanding access through USA Field Hockey’s All Starz programs.

Your chapter leadership team provides your local entry point — offering adaptive clinics, training sessions, and events for athletes of all abilities, all within a supportive and inclusive community.

These programs are part of a growing network of official USA Field Hockey All Starz partner organizations, led by trained coaches and designed to create safe, fun, development-focused environments. Participation also opens a pathway to World Hockey ID — the international identification and development system that evaluates adaptive athletes, celebrates skill progression, and connects players to higher-level opportunities within the global para-hockey landscape.

Whether you’re already involved or just beginning, your chapter leadership team is here to help you get connected and be part of the movement: field hockey for every body.

Parents & Fans

The All Starz program thrives on the energy and encouragement of parents and fans. Your support extends beyond the sidelines — it helps foster inclusion, sportsmanship, and a sense of pride among every adaptive field hockey athlete.

By celebrating each success, large or small, you help create an environment where athletes of all abilities can grow in confidence, teamwork, and love for the game. Together, we advance the spirit of field hockey as a sport for all and a sport for life.

Umpires

Knowledgeable, compassionate umpires are essential to the success of adaptive field hockey. In All Starz, officials do more than enforce the rules — they help create an environment where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can safely learn, grow, and compete with confidence.

Adaptive officiating requires awareness, empathy, and a deep understanding of ability-based play. Our umpires model patience, consistency, and fairness while promoting accountability and respect across all participants. By focusing on athletes’ abilities and meeting each player where they are, umpires help elevate the entire game — ensuring that every whistle supports learning and inclusion.

Umpires: Start Where You Are. Grow as Far as You Want.
Whether you’re new to officiating or a seasoned professional, USA Field Hockey provides the framework to help you succeed. While on-demand training is in development, we encourage interested umpires to reach out to learn more about adaptive field hockey opportunities, mentorship, and local involvement.

Join us in shaping a future where every athlete, regardless of ability, has the chance to play, belong, and thrive.

Adaptive Coaching

In adaptive field hockey, coaches are more than teachers of the game — they are architects of inclusion. From first-time volunteers to seasoned leaders, adaptive coaches create spaces where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can discover their potential, build confidence, and experience the joy of teamwork.

The most powerful tools in an adaptive coach’s playbook aren’t drills or tactics — they’re patience, empathy, and a belief in every athlete’s ability to learn and grow. Presuming competence means seeing beyond challenges and focusing on each player’s strengths, abilities, and capacity for progress. It’s about meeting athletes where they are, allowing time to process and learn, and celebrating every success, big or small.

USA Field Hockey supports coaches who are redefining what it means to lead with heart. Through ongoing education, shared resources, and a growing network of adaptive coaches, we’re helping make field hockey a sport where every player is seen, supported, and valued.

Great coaches shape great experiences. Adaptive field hockey coaches shape something even greater — belonging. Together, we’re creating a game where every athlete can play, grow, and thrive.

Fueling Growth, TogetheR

Programs like Able Athletics, Long Island All Starz, and PA Revs All Starz are leading the way in adaptive field hockey—creating inclusive spaces where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can learn, compete, and thrive. Working together under the All Starz banner and in collaboration with USA Field Hockey, these clubs are building pathways for participation and competition at the local, national, and international levels.

USA Field Hockey encourages coaches and clubs across the country to expand their programming to include adaptive opportunities. By integrating adaptive sessions or forming dedicated All Starz teams, coaches help ensure that field hockey truly becomes a sport for every body—where all athletes can play, belong, and shine.

Educators, PE & MSO

Educators, PE Teachers & Program Leaders: You Are the Game Changers

You may not think of yourself as a coach—but you are often the first person to open the door to sport for athletes of all abilities.

Educators, physical education teachers, and community program leaders play a vital role in introducing adaptive field hockey to children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Your willingness to adapt activities, foster inclusion, and celebrate progress helps athletes discover their abilities and the joy of being part of a team.

Through USA Field Hockey’s All Starz program, we’re developing tools and resources that make introducing adaptive field hockey simple, safe, and fun for all participants. From modified practice plans and inclusive PE activities to low-cost adaptive equipment bundles, our goal is to help you bring the game to every student, in every setting.

You don’t need to be an expert—you just need an open mind and a commitment to inclusion. USA Field Hockey encourages schools, recreation departments, and multi-sport organizations to add adaptive opportunities within their programs, ensuring that field hockey truly becomes a sport for every body.

Together, we can grow the game—one classroom, playground, and community at a time.
